Posted Sunday, October 18, 2009 Island Needlework: Season Opens Dec. 1 The re-opening of Island Needlework this season will be delayed to December 1. A lot is going on with Julie. Click on article title to learn more. Suprise! It's Pam, back at the shop and behind the computer.
As many of you have already heard, Julie's husband, Dick, suffered a freak accident on August 3 that required him to be air-lifted to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami. While walking across the top of an old cistern in a yard in Key West, the concrete that had covered the cistern for over 30 years suddenly gave way. Dick fell 15 feet and 600 pounds of concrete fell on top of his chest.
Eleven weeks later Dick is out of the hospital and receiving physical, occupational, speech and neuropsychology therapy in Miami. He has made tremendous progress: he's walking (slowly), talking (lots), cracking jokes (no kidding) and working very hard to regain all his capabilities. Julie, and her daughters Zoe and Lacy have been strong advocates and nurturing caregivers for him throughout. Last weekend they were able to bring Dick home to Key West to celebrate his birthday with the hometown crowd. Soooooo many people came by to wish him well. It was a very happy event!
If you'd like to follow Dick's progress and/or send him a message, you can do so through www.caringbridge.org. The website includes a journal, written by Lacy, with lots of Dick's doings, photos, and a guestbook which you can use to send Dick a message. When you sign on to the website, you'll be asked who you want to visit; type in richardpischke (with no spaces). You'll be asked for your email address, but no other personal info.
Given the above, it's not surprising that the shop is going to open a little later than usual this year -- December 1. But we'll be ready when we do open. Beginning December 2, Ruby Reynolds will be teaching a class every Wednesday morning on fiber and stitch enhancement using minis, If you're interested in attending, call or email (islandneedlework@bellsouth.net) the shop.
And, here's a look at what Julie was working on earlier this summer. Remember this simple canvas (Summer Seas Starfish - 26PA; Summer Seas Sand Dollar - 26PB)? This project is a great way to use up leftover thread. Then hand-stitch the completed canvas onto a tote and you've created a versatile and distinctive carryall. It's easy! And there's a tote color and design just right for you. Great modeling job, Lacy.
And here's another one.
I'll miss the shop opening in December, but will be in Key West for the month of January. Hope I see lots of you at Sip & Stitch during that time. |
